My experience has been that they will be extremely helpful since they normally labor in the shadows and welcome the opportunity to help people get adept at their specialty, in order to be better appreciated.

I concur that it is a great strategy to seek advice from experts who are not well known as they very likely would be more forthcoming, the trick may be how to identify these people.
