Whether a candidate is progressive, conservative, or any other label, if the only people that voted for him/her were either perfect or thought exactly like they he or she does on every position,
that person would never get elected and everybody knows that. Many candidates run for power/prestige, but even those who are running because they believe in a higher cause rationalize
that they need as many votes as possible in order to implement their vision. We’ve seen many examples of people running on a platform, which doesn’t get implemented after they get elected for various reasons including not enough political support from their own party, polls showing less public appetite for the idea, or the true costs are too high.
